Events Manager - How do I add Google Maps to locations for free without an API key?

Events Manager has the facility to add Google Maps to your locations, making it easier for your visitors to find the location of your event. This does require the use of a Google API key which you must sign up for and can cost money when visitors use your map.

If you don't want to have an API key and potentially pay, I have a workaround listed below that will display the map when your visitor clicks on the event location:

  1. From your Wordpress Dashboard, please navigate to the Events > Locations menu on the left.
  2. From there either edit an existing location by clicking on it or create a new location.
  3. In a new browser tab, please visit https://www.google.com/maps/ and enter the location in the search bar at the top left.
  4. Once you have found your location, please click on "Share" on the left and select "Embed a map".
  5. Copy the code generated and go back to your website browser tab.
  6. Select "Text" above the content area (instead of "Visual") and paste your copied code into the text area (right click and "paste").
  7. Click "Publish" or "Update" (depending on if you are creating a new location or editing one) and your map should now display under the location details.

Note: you will see that the words "Map Unavailable" are still displayed despite the map now being present. This is because Events Manager is still looking for the Google API key. Please contact me via email at support@amtwebservices and I will add some code to remove this for you.
